Pre-Race Saturday and Sunday

The Garages fill up

Late arrivals trickled in and by noon all thirty teams were in the pits carrying out final preparations for the practice sessions to come at the end of the day.

Saturday 12:15 - 13:00 Free Practice Session 1

At the end of the session the five fastest cars were:

Saturday Snippets

Car 97, Team Fine Print, which was supplied by Frome 2CV Centre, was the only car to drive to the circuit. 

Ian James started at Mondello in 1991 and is now a Le Mans driver.  He was driving with Andrew Pirt who is in Car 59, Gate A Mation team.

Car 60, Four Oranges and a Lemon was set up by Paul Robertson; it is driven by four 2CV rookies including Gordon Riseley, who is a Le Mans Vintage car driver. 

Shaun McLaughlin who is driving in Car 11, Millgate Racing, said that at Mondello in 1999 his car had 13 engine changes (is this a record? Ed.).

Mark, of Car 70 RaceHire.com, reported that Pete Sparrow helped out by timing the engine; on Saturday they were doing 56.2. 

Francis Rottenburg   Francis Rottenburg of Car 77  Two Smoking Barrels said; "Our chassis is lively (evil)." 

Maurice O'Reilly (NZ) of Car 10 Clockwork Orange, came to this meeting after seeing the fun on the 2CVTV website. 

Fellow Clockwork Orange driver Steve Pfeifer, was sitting at home in Washington State USA also saw reports of the event on the Internet. 

Both Maurice and Steve drive in Spa 24 hour races for touring cars.

Marc, a founder of RaceHire.com, has a 2CV and a Corgi Legend. For £200 RaceHire.com will organise for you to race any vehicle (even a lawn-mower) at any track via their syndicate.

Engines gone so far (14:00 Saturday) Car 10 Clockwork Orange and Car 34 Team Yellow Peril.

Mark, mechanic for Car 70 RaceHire.com, reported that the car caught fire as the result of a backfire. He thinks it is because the team had ticket 13 in the raffle and was in 13th place at the time.

Sunday morning

Sunday dawned bright and a loss less breezy than Saturday. 

At 8 a.m. all was quiet in the garages, but the sizzling sound of frying bacon, plus that wonderful smell, filled the air as dozens of early morning bacon butties were being prepared.

Sunday 10:45 - 11:15 Free Practice Session 2

26 cars took advantage of a further practice session and it was closely fought with the first four cars within two seconds of each other.

At the end of the session the five fastest cars were:
1. Car 63 Tete Rouge Racing
2. Car 2 Team Gadget Racing +1.5 seconds
3. Car 1 Dead End Racing +1.7
4. Car 30 Ramageddon +1.9
5. Car 42 Turquoise Tortoise +2.6

Latest news is that the car caught fire as the result of an electrical fault. Mechanic Mark reports that the timing is being reset and, to be on the safe side, the carburretor is being replaced.

watchin the F1 Grand Prix   Some teams were so relaxed they were able to take time out to watch the start of the F1 Grand Prix at the Nurnberg Ring.  After one false start, at the first bend Ralf Schumacher, Fernando Alonso and Juan-Pablo Montoya left the track temporarily; sadly Mark Webber left it permanently.

One of the sponsors of Car 70 is Robin Webb of Vegetarian Shoes, which is based in Brighton Sussex.

Team 8 Rocket Dog Racing broke the exhaust, which was welded up with splints to get through qualifying last night. 

The wing has been adjusted today to accommodate a new unit for the race proper. 

Car 42 Turquoise Tortoise was used by the Top Gear team at Snetterton two years ago.  It has been restored and has achieved 5th place on the grid.

richard hollis   In the true spirit of the race, Richard Hollis of Car 5 Hollis Motorsport lent an engine cooling fan to John Barker of Car 70 RaceHire.com.
