Any thoughts that drivers may conserve themselves for the Enduro Race later that day proved unfounded as spectators were treated to one of the most exciting races of a very full day.
Roger Lott took a convincing win, snatching the lead from Richard Dalton who had led the initial part of the race from pole. Nick Woodward added third place to his impressive season statistics, despite starting from tenth place. There was disappointment for Pete Sparrow. Running in a strong third place for much of the race, and threatening second spot on occasions, he span off at Glenvarigill losing nine places. Similar off-road antics followed for Martin Woodley and Tim Dodgson. Sparrow fought back to eighth, securing valuable points toward his championship challenge. While the lead pack carved out a breathing space, a frantic battle ensued for 7th place, led by Bill Murray. A mistake at McIntyre cost him four places, but before long he was at the head of the pack again, fighting off strong challenges from Christian Callander and Neil Thompson.
Despite threats that he would no longer compete in sprint races, Royce Grey made a welcome return to the grid. Making up for a disappointing qualifying position, he fought his way up to third before his car finally died on lap ten.
