The 1999 season closed on a high point, with a thrilling race at a rain-soaked Pembrey track that saw Peter Simpson and Nick Woodward taking the chequered flag.
The treacherous conditions spelt an early finish for a number of drivers, not least of which was Richard Dalton, who tangled with a spinning Pete Sparrow. Relegated to the back of the field, Sparrow fought his way back up to the front, but he could not displace Simpson, who had inherited a great track position from co-driver Woodward.
Fortunately for Dalton, he had already secured his championship title at Oulton Park. This must have been little comfort to co-driver Gary Byatt, who never got to sit in the driver's seat.
The battle at the front of the field was intense, and the lead changed a number of times. Both Christian Callendar and Ed Mason took turns. Callendar's co-driver, Colin Whiteley, took a trip onto the green stuff and put back any hopes of victory. Ainslie Bousfield, taking over from Mason, looked as if he would get his first win. Unfortunately, a broken fan caused his engine to overheat and he was forced to slow down. A spin close to the end saw him finish in fifth place.
Paul Murphy ended his race at the side of the track after just three laps, his engine cutting out after taking on water. Andrew Pirt was another casualty, having come into contact with Francis Rottenburg. It was also a disappointing afternoon for Wayne Cowling and Roger Lott, finishing at the tail end of the field with an unreliable engine.
