Richard Dalton began the defence of his 1998 title in convincing style, leading the first championship race of the season from start to finish.
The unpredictable French weather had seen a wet practice session. Royce Grey could only manage a disappointing 10th spot on the grid for in his new car, now lacking the distinctive Valeo livery. Paul Taylor suffered a similar disappointment, relegated to 23rd spot due to engine problems.
Neil Thompson continued with the good form he showed towards the end of last season, qualifying 2nd in 'Yellow Peril', and making an early bid for the lead at the start. He was soon displaced by Pete Sparrow, and then challenged by Roger Lott. Neither could make much impression on Dalton, as he began to carve out a comfortable lead for himself. The leaders soon passed Mick Murphy's 'Murfedes' car, which had developed problems early on and already visited the pits.
By the mid-section of the race, Royce Grey began his recovery, cutting through the pack to reach 2nd place, from where he tried to eat into Dalton's lead. Paul Taylor made even more remarkable progress, taking back 10 places to finish in 13th position.
Zoe Cardell's season started badly. A low qualifying position was frustrated further by a trip into the gravel, after which she finished 3 laps down from the leaders.
