ADNITT AND LEITH TRIUMPH
IN SEASON OPENER - Matt Hollis
The 2006 2CVParts.com 2CV Racing Championship kicked
off with a ‘special’ event at everyone’s favourite
Welsh holiday destination, Pembrey. Much work had been done to
the track over the winter, most notably a new pit lane entry would mean
near misses on the exit of the final corner would (in theory) be a thing
of the past. The Welsh must have also worked their magic on the
weather, as rain was unusually absent despite the race being held in
April. Much change had occurred in the 2CV racing world as well. Of
the top 6 championship finishers in 2005, none were returning in either
the same car or were planning to do a full season. Triple champion
Pete Sparrow had sold his car to Shaun McLaughlin, who painted it a delightful
shade of orange and gave it a tail. Sparrow would still be competing
however, sharing a Tete Rouge machine with Paul Robertson. McLaughlin
had in turn swapped his car for the temptation of cash, with Nick Roads
and the rest of Crisis Racing having their wallets lightened. 2005
runner-up Pete Cardell-Williams was present, but his car had changed
from being faster than a fast thing, to slower than a slow thing. Phil
Myatt had sold his vehicle to rookie Simon Leith, who partnered by Gary
Adnitt for the enduros, started as one of the favourites for the new
multi-discipline series (the multi-discipline being sprints and enduros,
not the ability to change engines, make tea etc.). Wayne Cowling
had decided not to make the trip from the other side of the country,
whilst Andy Smith was sharing driving duties with Cardell-Williams.
With up to
4 drivers competing, qualifying was going to be tough for some teams as all drivers
had to complete 3 laps in the limited time. At the end of both sessions,
it was Adnitt/Leith on pole, closely followed by Steve Panas. Steve had
virtually rebuilt his entire car over the cold months, including a new British
Racing green colour scheme, but he had nearly come unstuck during testing as
soil mysteriously appeared in his fuel tank. Clearly Steve was taking the
green concept a little too far, but all was well when it really mattered. 3rd
on the grid was Shaun McLaughlin, partnered by Myatt, followed by Sparrow/Robertson,
the blatantly not slow Cardell-Williams/Smith and Mr. Chairman Trevor Williams/Simon
Turner. Lucky to be on the grid at all were Ben Allan’s crew, as
a stripped spark plug just before the first session meant a very hasty engine
change.
Pembrey can
often cause problems at the first corner, as whoever designed the track thought
it would be funny to put a really tight hairpin at the end of the straight. Remarkably
everyone got round, although the fast-starting Gary Byatt (driving with Oliver
Hall in the Stingray car) managed to scratch a bit of paint on the way. Due
to the relative lack of contact on the first lap, Pete Cardell-Williams made
up for it on the 2nd, as he and Williams collided, which also delayed Neil Thompson. In
fact, the contact spread the field out a bit (hence forth known as ‘fieldspread’ thanks
to F1ITV’s James ‘state the obvious’ Allen), with the result
being Myatt, Panas and Adnitt in the lead group, followed gallantly by Byatt,
Robertson, Christian Callander and Matt Hollis. Adnitt was the first to
make a compulsory pit-stop (a total of 3 would need to be made at any time during
the race) as early as lap 4 in a bid to get some clear track. Ben Allan’s
day didn’t get any better, as the engine went pop on lap 7 (not ideal at
the best of times, even worse in a 2 hour race).
Robertson
was another to make an early stop, handing over to Sparrow, who then returned
to the pits on the next 2 laps to get all of their stops out of the way. Despite
this meaning they dropped to last, they wouldn’t need to stop again. Except
they did. A loose manifold resulted in a 5-lap deficit, and no hope of
victory. Neil Thompson was making a storming recovery from his early delay,
passing Hollis, Callander and Robertson (prior to the manifold issue) to lie
4th after 30 minutes. At roughly half-distance the pitlane became a real
hive of activity as cars poured in and out. Matt Hollis stopped 3 times
in quick succession, eventually handing over to Richard on the 3rd stop. Myatt
and Panas, still racing as one, came in together and left the pits still close,
but Adnitt, who had stopped earlier, passed them both. Byatt was now out
in front having not stopped, but his race was ruined when at the first pitstop
the oil filler cap had to be fixed, leaving Oliver Hall in 11th, 3 laps down.
Meanwhile,
Rocket Dog were slowly catching up, having lost half a lap after the early contact. In
fact, Andy Smith climbed as high as 4th, but they were out of sequence with the
pitstops compared to most of the other teams. Adnitt and Myatt pitted together
as Panas stayed out, handing over to Leith and McLaughlin. When Steve eventually
pitted again, he dropped to second, between Leith (now with a reasonable, but
not safe, lead) and McLaughlin. With Leith out on his own, Panas and McLaughlin
were able to give each other a tow, meaning the gap gradually closed as the time
ticked away. In fact, when Leith lost a considerable amount of time with
a mistake, it was pretty clear the final pitstops would be crucial. Leith’s
stop went well, and once the others had pitted he found himself with just a slender
7 second lead. McLaughlin and Panas were still locked together, but at
the flag Leith managed to hold on to win by just 4 seconds, with McLaughlin finishing
just ahead of Panas (who had driven the whole race by himself, as had Jon Twidale).
4th place
went to the Hollis brothers thanks to some nifty pit work, followed by Team Stinky
(Neil Thompson, Christine Thompson and Chris Yates). Cardell-Williams/Smith
did well to salvage 6th place, ahead of Callander/Graham Harper, Twidale and
the similarly delayed Williams/Turner. Nick Grant and Matt Riley, racing
Paul Taylor’s car in preparation for the 24hr kept out of the trouble to
complete the top 10. Sparrow/Robertson eventually finished 11th ahead of
Hall/Byatt and the all-female team of Zoe Cardell, Katrina Sparrow, Gillian Doyle
and Lyn Sparrow - a great effort considering 3 of them had never raced before! The
final three positions were occupied by Geoff Turrall/Robert Wilkey, Bob Rice/Steve
Cowell/Keith Shoebridge and Nick Roads/Simon Gue/Hugh McCurrich/Brian Doherty. Team
Argent Provocateur (Ben Allan/Jamie Lister/Craig Glass) were the only non-finishers,
their luck deserting them before they’d even had a real chance to get going.
