Practice at Mallory was the usual lottery, with groups of cars running around together trying to get the perfect tow to get on pole. For the sixth time in seven races Pete Sparrow managed to get the extra three points for pole, having slip-streamed past Derek Harnett and Graham Wallace on his quickest lap. Second was Gary Adnitt with a car suffering from fuel starvation. Down the field there were other problems, Warwick Howlett's exhaust fell off, Richard Hollis was misfiring, and Christian Callander and Mike Cooper stopped early in the session. After Practice, Phil Myatt's car needed an engine change, in going the Mondello engine.

At the front, Sparrow led the charge into Gerrard's, with Adnitt slotting in behind. At the rear, Katie Croucher couldn't find any gears and was very slow away which didn't help her chances with her standard road car engine. The field buzzed around on the first lap as one. But Adnitt didn't last long in second, as the modifications Team Collier had made after practice to cure the cutting out, had made the problem worse. Adnitt started to drop back and was soon passed by an on-form Wayne Cowling. By the end of the first lap the top three had pulled out a gap on the chasing pack, led by Graham Wallace, Derek Harnett, and Nick Woodward. But moving up fast was Phil Myatt who soon picked off the battle for third and then set about closing the gap to the leading pair.

Down the field there were fights going on all down the field, but Mike Storey's car was falling back with an engine that was losing power. Also in trouble was the Hollis car, which was misfiring again. Up at the sharp end of the field, Cowling slipstreamed pass only to be retaken by Sparrow on the next straight. Cowling then decided to sit on Sparrow's tail until the last lap.

Having inched up to the leaders, Myatt started dropping back into the battle for fourth led by Wallace. Adnitt was battling with Harnett and Callander for sixth and was finding that the racing down the field was not as gentlemanly as the front - he soon had both his rear wings flattened. Onto lap ten, the cracking battle of Davis, Howlett, Wann and Glide ended in tears, when Davis lost the back end at Gerrard's, causing Wann to spin in avoidance. He was narrowly missed by Allan Glide, but not by Davis as he spun across the track.

With two cars sat in the middle of the track, the officials had no option but to stop the race. This meant that Cowling's cunning plan of taking the lead on the last lap came unstuck and Wallace who had just taken third place lost it as the results were declared after 9 laps.
