For the first time the Brands Hatch race was run as a 45 minute race, with the result taken after the first 15 minutes counting towards the sprint championship, and the overall result after 45 minutes counting towards the enduro championship.
Excessive costs saw a grid of only 20 cars. Once again Pete Sparrow managed to line up on pole, with Gary Adnitt joining him on the first row in a very battered car - team mate Ainslie Bousfield had rolled the car on the inside of Paddock in testing the day before. Third on the grid was Wayne Cowling, who was paring up with former 2CV Champion David O'Keefe for the enduro race.
At the start Sparrow led away from Adnitt, but both second row cars were slow away. Phil Myatt, having qualified in his best starting position in fourth, was soon down to 7th at Paddock, after being passed by te fast starting Derek Harnett, Woodward and Findlay. Also moving up from 14th on the grid was Christian Callandar, who had made up four places by Druids on the first lap. Down at Graham Hill Band, Tim Dodgson had a major 'tank slapper' on the exit of the corner. Other than a clip from Callendar, the filed managed to miss Dodgson's stricken car as it sat in the middle of the track.
Out at the end of the first lap was Trevor Williams, his fuel filler cap having fallen off - a costly mistake! At the front Sparrow and Adnitt were pulling away from the chasing pack, with Myatt making up for his poor start by moving back up into third by lap three. Woodward had other ideas, and soon took the position back from Myatt.
As the 15 minute sprint session drew to a close, Wayne Cowling went off at Paddock, resulting in a 'pace car' period. Adnitt dived into the pits first to hand over to team mate Bousfield, quickly followed by half the field. Callendar had to drive through the pits as his team failed to respond to the situation in time.
After the pit stops, it became apparent that Sparrow's lightening run-around the car was faster than the Team Collier stop, who had to let the belts out for Bousfield. Sparrow was leading by half a lap from Bousfield with Simpson (in Woodward's car) a distant third, well ahead of Mike Taylor (replacing Myatt). Sparrow cruised home for victory while the crowd were entertained by a superb battle for fifth between Wheeler, Pickering, Morris and Storey. Taylor held them all off to claim fourth - his best score to date.
