Saturday 8th July 2006 There was a gentle start to the day, because at Anglesey you are not allowed to start the engines on racing cars before 10 a.m. It was dry and cloudy - a far cry from yesterday's weather which resulted in some of the 2cv-ers getting sunburn. At 10:15, after scrutineering, eleven 2cvs went onto the circuit for the qualifying session for the sprint race later in the day. Several drivers tested how fast they could take the bends, particularly at School Corner and Abbotts. In the end Pete Sparrow snatched pole position. The marshalls in the parc ferme predicted that it would rain at 4 p.m. - the time the 2cv Sprint race was due to start - they were wrong, it started at six minutes to 4! The entire race took place in appalling conditions with a howling gale complemented by driving rain. Pete Sparrow (28), who enjoys wet weather driving pulled away from the rest of the field. Jon Twidale (67) went off onto the grass at School Corner then Christian Callendar (48) went into the tyre wall and red flags indicated that the race had been stopped. Jon's car was collected and Christian's was taken to the pits, where several people rushed to help him get it ready for the restart. A few minutes later the race was restarted with Christian re-joining from the pit lane. Once again Pete Sparrow pulled away, Steve Panas (7) and Simon Leith (91) were left to fight it out for second place with the Hollis brothers (9 &10) behind. Jamie Lister (76) managed to keep the car on the track and Matthew Riley (69) kept going after several spins. After 8 laps the chequered flag was waved as Pete Sparrow went by, with Steve second and Simon third. Christian Callendar achieved a creditable 7th place. There was no presentation on the podium, because it was just too wet and windy! Yvette Asscher

Results Simon Leith & Gary Adnitt (91)
My confidence grew as I learnt the circuit and in the last 2 sessions I ran round with Gary in Paul Robertson's car and posted several laps in the 1.01s including a 1.01.5 ! The W*nker board had been taped to the side of the motorhome with points allocated for anyone taking the mick, stating the obvious, being sarcastic or generally being a T*sser. As Gary had thought of the idea.....we all knew who was going to win or rather, lose!!! With each person being given a 'Star Wars' name, Gary's points were in double figures in no time. Gary and I have been OB1 and Luke Skywalker for some time. Paul became Jabba (!), Christian was R2D2, (can't think why), Keith was Chewy, Steve was C3PO, Zoe was Princess Leah, (I always did fancy her!).....etc. Pete was Hans Solo and had 15 points.......and he hadn't even turned up yet! So I was set for qualifying on the Saturday and took to my bed early to chants of (from the hard-core of Gary, Trevor, Keith and Tim), 'lightweight', 'loser', and some other words which should not appear in print! I woke on the Saturday feeling distinctly un-hung-over, which is odd for a 2cv weekend! Qualifying, however, didn't go quite according to plan and I was only 5th after a quickest lap of 1.02.8! After picking Gary and Pete's brains (didn't take long), I realised where I was going wrong and knew I would go better in the race. Until, that is, with just 30 minutes to go before the start, the Welsh weather threw a spanner in the works and the heavens opened. So, everything I learnt in testing was kind of irrelevant apart from where the corners were. Gary tore up and qualifying sheet and we set about an new plan. Gary's advice was, "Drive it fast and keep it on the black stuff".....thanks mate! For once I was very calm on the start. I practised my get-away on the green flag lap (3,000 revs and pray) and then hunted for grip before lining up for the start. I kept 5th into the first corner but Matt Riley had an off and I was promoted to 4th. Pete Sparrow at the front just disappeared into the distance, (Bastard - you know I only say it because I mean it mate!) then is was Christian Callender, Steve Panas Me and Richard Hollis who was piling on the pressure. I took a different line through every corner trying to find the grip when all of a sudden, I passed Christian easily into School. He had run over a kerb and pulled an ignition lead off the coil. One lap later, he was in the wall at the hairpin having locked up! The race was red flagged and we gridded up again for a re-start. Again I got a good start and held 3rd. Going into Abbot, Richard had a huge moment and was sideways when his brother Matthew over took him. Pete had disappeared again and Steve Panas was 3 seconds ahead of me. In turn, I had pulled a 3 second gap on the Hollis brothers. All of a sudden I found some grip and some rythm and I started to reel in Steve at about a second a lap. With 1 lap to go I was right behind him into the hairpin and got a really good drive out. I was nearly alongside going into Douglas but backed off right on the entry to avoid a collision which would probably have taken us both out. The last lap was uneventful and I came home in 3rd which considering the conditions I was pleased with. It was an excellent race. Sunday started with the hang-over from hell......that's more like it!! We qualified at 10.10am and Gary posted the 3rd quickest time with Christian/Graham Harper ahead of him and Pete/Paul on pole. I was starting the race and this time I WAS nervous. I held 3rd place off the line but Graham got in front of Paul at Abbot, Graham went wide and let both me and Paul through. On the run down to the hairpin I managed to out-break Paul and on the exit I was just in front but on the outside line for Douglas, the left hander. I held my line leaving Paul enough room on the inside so there was no contact. When we exited Douglas and came onto the pit straight I was in the lead. I am not sure what happened immediately after that, (Gary has banned me from looking in my mirrors!), but when I did look in them a bit later they were filled with Trevor Williams. Trev and I ran around for several laps and when I made a mistake at Abbot and ran wide, he took no time in nipping in front to take the lead. As we came down the pit straight on the next lap, the whole pit wall erupted and were clapping and cheering......how good did that feel Trev? I took the lead back a few laps later and then, on lap 22 I pitted to hand over to Gary. Our pit stop took just 12 seconds from wheel stop to wheel start and Gary went out behind the leader, Trever but with a 25 second gap over the Pete and Christian who were glued together. The next 35 minutes were a little nerve wracking as Pete and Christian towed each other round reeling in Trever fairly quickly. Gary pounded in lap after lap in the 102s and even with Pate and Christian working together, by the end of the race Gary and I had an 18 second lead. A big thanks to Gary and to Pete for their endless advice, help and piss taking, and also to Keith (Tiny) for his endless work both before and during the weekend to make sure we had a reliable car! Again a brilliant race and what a feeling to be back on the top step of the podium after a disappointing Cadwell. Anglesey 2006 - Report by Christian Callander Friday was my birthday so I had the day off - painted wings and loaded the car and van. The panels fell over before they'd dried, the gearbox broke while loading and I suffered a blow-out on the van on the M6. I therefore did not arrive in good spirits nor on my birthday at Anglessey. Gearbox nut secured and all ratios available meant qualifying was possible. Harper induction bits on an engine which had only just been wed to heads recovered from Snetterton dead 'un produced good sprint speed. Good enough enough for Q2 (unaided). And then it rained. An okay start consolidated 2nd but on the second lap, kerb hopping pulled off a plug lead from the coil. On half steam the following pack sailed past in the spray. Gravity secured the plug lead once more and normal service was resumed. On catching the pack tentative braking at the hairpin resulted in locked wheels, a trip to the grass and an intimate moment with tyre barrier. Red flags enabled my escape to the pits and possibility of a restart. Schumacher would be proud. Anyhows - slow to restart and too much caution converted Q2 to P7. Gales and rain must have cleared heads. Partner Graham Harper did the first qualifying session and together Q2 was secured. A spritely bound from the start put Harper ahead of Robertson. Unused to turning right without a guide, Harper tripped over his own tyres and dropped into the pack. From the commentary position (you should have a go!) I had a good view of his dice with Aubrey Bottlebank. Dry conditions meant an early change and when I took over I was soon circulating with Captain Pete Sparrow. No quarter was asked or given as we pulled through the pack lapping all but Trevor and ultimate victors Leith & Adnitt. Q2 to P3 - safe points for everyone. Thanks to Catherine for ensuring sufficient fuel. Graham for fixing 'box, company and driving. Erica buying sprint entry for birthday. Tete Rouge for getting me out again and Trev and Sparra for a clean contest thoughout Anglesey 2006 - Report by Jon Twidale Well what an eventful weekend for
Car 67. We arrived at the circuit on Saturday morning all ready for some
really good racing. Julian and I had changed the engine from Cadwell.
I was sure this was the cause of my poor performance there and was feeling
confident of success. If only I could win every race from now on I
had a chance at the championship ( well as the song says " if
you don't have a dream how will you make it come true"). Undaunted and bouyed by the offer of a spare arm from Paul I went back to our campsite and battled the elements overnight, just managing to keep the tent intact through the gales. Sunday saw the true camaraderie of 2CV racing come to the fore. An absolutely huge thank you to Christian and Derek for their technical advice, Neil Thompson and JT for their practical hands on effort to get me back on track and into Qualifying with literally seconds to spare. Lucky Jon again. Thanks also to Pete for giving Jan a lesson in 2CV spare parts (is she really an Engineer?). I qualified 9th and finished 8th which I was really pleased with. Cheers Jon and Jan
