Sunday at Snetterton 2006

Sunday came bright and partly cloudy, but not as cold as yesterday and the bonus is that the wind has reduced. The forecast for the rest of the day shows increasing cloud, but no rain.

Overnight the combined qualification results were published plus the grid for the race. There were no surprises in the top five cars and people's predictions were correct Tete Rouge 1 (28) in pole position with Team Gadget Racing (4) alongside, on the second row are Team Tigger (5) and Rocket Dog Racing (2), on the third row are Tete Rouge 2 (13) and Turquoise Tortoise (42). The full grid is listed below.

Sunday afternoon - and they're off!

Making the final adjustments to the car sometimes involves intimate, close team-working as illustrated by the Stingray 90 team (left).
Local 2cv owners plus some visitors from the Netherlands brought their road cars to take part in a parade lap before the race. Over 30 vehicles took part including some very early ripple bonnet models, old AK vans and a Traction Avant Leger 15; they were allowed to do two laps of the circuit.   Visitors

At 15:45 the race cars made their way to the grid (left); there was a delay because Turquoise Tortoise car 42 had been told to stop in the wrong position; it took a few minutes to realise what had happened and get it moved to its rightful position on the third row.

The warm-up lap started led by the pace car, a Renault Clio (well at least it's French).

The photo on the right shows the pack led by Pete Sparrow in Tete Rouge 1 as it swings round the long Corem Curve approaching the Russell Bend in grid order ready for the rolling start.

And they'r off

From the start the leading group contained four closely competing cars; Tete Rouge 1 (28), Team Tigger (5), Team Gadget Racing (4) and Stingray (90).

The following group was led by Rocket Dog Racing (2) with MRB Racing (69) and Pret a Boire (54) behind.

After the first hour Stingray had to come into the pits to have a loose rear wing re-attached; this left Team Tigger in the lead with Tete Rouge 1 and Gadget Racing close behind.

There have been a few incidents. On lap 3 Turquoise Tortoise (42) came in with the damaged rear wing (minor contact), Rocket Dog (2) also came in as did Argent Provocateur (76).

After 90 minutes Zoe Cardell in Simply the Breast (14) "Got boxed-in and I had nowhere to go. The result was a Zoe sandwich". The front of the car was smashed in and the fan broken. After some quick work in the pits (see picture right with Geoff Archer replacing the broken fan) and club hammer treatment on the bonnet, the car rejoined the race with Lynn Sparrow at the wheel.

Results table   Monitors show details of the positions of the cars throughout the race. Reports from Race Control are printed and distributed every two hours.

Dusk falls and the pit lights come on (right).

Team Tigger (5) which had been the victim of the shunt with Zoe Cardell had to do some work on the rear lights before it got dark in order to be allowed to continue racing.

Driver change

The safety car goes out when a car is in trouble on the circuit, it acts as a pace car for the competitors slowing down the pack to avoid further problems while the damaged car is removed back to the pits. When a car is towed back the team gets an automatic 5 lap penalty.

The safety car has been out several times already; the photo on the left shows a very busy pit lane as cars chose to come in whilst the safety car is out.

They are soon on their way out (right) to rejoin the race. The safety car goes out immediately in front of the leading car; all cars are expected to catch up and remain in place (no overtaking allowed) behind the safety car until it turns off into the pit lane, at that point the race continues and cars are allowed to overtake.   Re-joining the race after a pit stop
bends   As it gets dark visibility is reduced, but that does not stop the highly competitive nature of the race. On the left we see a closely packed group of cars coming round the Russell Bend.

It is now dark and we are able to speak with Viv Hill Team Manager of Rocket Dog Racing, who was unlucky enough to be struck in the face as the car came in for a pit stop earlier in the evening.

We are pleased to hear that, after a check by the paramedics, she is OK but has a very sore nose.
