Terry Scannell gives a Marshal’s viewpoint of the 2cv 24hr Race So why do we in orange enjoy marshalling for the 2cv 24hr meeting? Simply it’s the Entertainment, Camaraderie, Fun, Atmosphere and the Teamwork. The 2cv’s are such great fun to watch, the entertainment value is first rate and no matter if the competitors are in first or last position in the race they all give it 110%. The experience of seeing a pack of 2cv’s coming towards you in the dark, trading positions every lap without (too much) contact is something not to miss. It's a very different event with marshalling shifts, night racing and 24 hours of close racing as only the 2CV's can. The camaraderie of the drivers and team members is highlighted when anything goes wrong with the cars, whether it be their own or another team’s car as everyone will rally round to help fix the problem and to enable the car to continue on it’s way to the chequered flag. The atmosphere in the paddock during the event, especially during the middle of the night and early hours of the morning is superb. The sight of the odd mechanic sound asleep through pure exhaustion lying on the concrete apron behind the pits, people treading carefully over and around him, while the aroma of sizzling bacon, sausages, eggs and coffee wafts around are all unique to the 24hr event. All this as the action continues in the garages with mechanics preparing for the next stops or frantically trying to make urgent repairs so that they can return cars to the fray. It’s a good weekend that any race marshal should experience. This is definitely an event where the more people who come along the more fun it is. The teamwork of the officials and marshals, whether on out on the bank, in the pits or paddock or up in Race Control together with the Recovery crews and Circuit staff and more importantly each and every competitor all pulling together with one aim – to make a successful weekend’s racing all helps to compensate for the one thing that can be lacking – sleep! The way the 2cv people look after the marshals is fantastic, starting the weekend with the Friday evening BBQ, where the competitors and marshal’s can get together in a truly friendly atmosphere over a bite to eat and a pint (or two) of liquid refreshment! All the 2cv people are a great bunch to know and it would be a sad day for us all if we ever lost the 2cv 24hr race at Snetterton. If all racing teams & clubs were as friendly and as enthusiastic as the 2cv Club is it would be a pleasure to marshal every single day. If you've haven’t anything else planned for the weekend of the 2cv 24 hour race I'd seriously recommend making the effort to come along, you won't think it was a bad idea. Many of us have been here for the past two years at Snetterton and enjoyed a weekend of superb motor sport together with the fellowship of other like-minded marshals and competitors. Also if you are considering how to become involved in marshalling just ask any of the girls and boys in orange around the circuit during the weekend, they would be only too pleased to assist you or you can contact The British Automobile Racing Club (BARC) via e:mail at [email protected] or via the website at www.barc.net.
