Mallory, 25th April 2004

 Race Review by Richard Hollis

Despite having the layout of a basic scalextric track (minus a cross-over section), Mallory Park always seems to offer one of the best races of the season, with a major slipstream marathon being the order of the day. The tiny Leicestershire village of Kirkby Mallory was this year hit by a local heatwave, but at least you can always take a dip in the lake if it gets too much. Nineteen cars entered this year, with Christian Callander, Aubrey Brocklebank and Mick Storey making their seasonal debuts, and Jon Twidale having his first ever car race. It was good to see Mick brought his car to this event, having admitted that while his tent was more aerodynamically efficient, it suffered from a severe lack of horsepower.

A pre-event camshaft timing session resulted in much discussion of numbers (Sesame Street would have been proud). Come Saturday morning however, everyone's engines were present and correct in their cars, ready for the qualifying session. It appeared that the majority of drivers had misread the timetable and thought that the race came before qualifying, as the field buzzed round as one, attempting to get the perfect tow down the straights. Every now and then a car or two would be rudely spat out the back of the pack, only to immediately re-enter the fray in a bid to get an ideal lap, and ruin everybody else's. At the end of the session it was Wayne Cowling who had done the best job, ahead of Phil Myatt, Simon Turner, and the man in black, Jon Davis. Although Peter Wann claimed he had more engine problems, there were growing rumours in the paddock that by constantly emitting smoke he was attempting to blind the other drivers, in a James Bond style (missiles were allegedly found in his headlamps at scrutineering). Richard Hollis clearly thought he was in Formula 1 and only had to do one lap to qualify, as his new engine seized at Gerrards a few minutes into the session dumping him not only in the gravel but into last place on the grid as well. A borrowed engine from Tete Rouge Racing meant that he, along with everyone else, made the grid for the start of the race.

As the red lights went out, the green lights didn't come on. This didn't really make much of a difference, as most people were too busy concentrating on making their cars go to notice what colour the lights changed to. Christine Thompson was one of the few who got caught out, dropping to the back from her 10th place grid spot. Richard Hollis was showing increasing evidence of his F1 mindset as he rocketed up 8 places by the first corner (apparently his traction control didn't actually exist, he had just got a good getaway by pressing the accelerator). At the front it was Cowling and Myatt who entered the first corner side by side, with Davis trying to get around the outside of both of them. At the second corner Storey took an agricultural route as the pack tried to fit through as one, dropping him to 9th. Over the line it was Cowling leading from Turner, Myatt, Davis, Pete Sparrow and Simon Pearson. On lap 2 it was Davis who turned into a lawnmower as Pearson tried to get past for 4th. Overtaking was abundant on every lap, the width of the track the only thing stopping 5-abreast racing. After a while it was Cowling and Turner who were beginning to eke out a gap, before Simon got far too excited about possibly winning for the first time and spun back into the clutches of the fight for 3rd. This left Wayne out in front, where he stayed to claim his first win and close the gap in the championship. Myatt just got 2nd, with only two tenths covering him, Pearson and Turner on the line. Storey got 5th, ahead of Davis and Christian Callander, who had been in 5th with half a lap to go. Steve Panas was closing on them all, having finally overcome the fuel starvation problems that had plagued him all weekend. A 10th place finish for Sparrow wasn't what he had hoped for, but Trevor Williams in 9th was doing an excellent impression of a Cheshire Cat having beaten the ex-champ. Thompson recovered to 11th from her poor start, despite being very nearly driven into the pit wall by the forceful Aubrey Brocklebank. Katie Croucher lasted 4 laps before retiring in the pits, and although the reason for this was not certain, the clonking coming from within her engine may have had something to do with it. Matthew Hollis was going steady in 9th when his clutch cable broke on lap 7 leaving him without any gears (always a problem when trying to make the car go forward). Jon Twidale stayed out of trouble to finish his first race in 15th, whilst Matt Riley crawled home in 17th with a sick car.
