Well, I now know what I have let myself in for!
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for elevating me to the position of Chairman of our club. If I can do the job half as well as Mick has done over the preceding years, and come out with my hair and sanity still intact I will be very pleased.
So, where are we now? As I said in my recent email, fibreglass wings and bonnets are allowed for next year. They will not be compulsory and will have to be exact facsimiles of the original steel panels. We also have a club camshaft, which will hopefully please everyone and put an end to speculation about who has managed to find the "golden cam" and about the legality of competitor's engines. Details of how to get hold of the camshafts will be forthcoming.
One of the objections that have been raised to fibreglass wings is the possibility that debris will be left on the track after any contact.
This wouldn't be so much of a problem if we all remembered that we participate in a non-contact sport. I had quite a few conversations with people at Silverstone who were none too pleased with some of our competitors driving standards. We can all be overcome with the red mist during competition, but leaning on someone else's car, using them as a brake, shutting the door too viciously or not lifting off when someone has made a pass are all not acceptable.
What can we do? We all want to win, but we should all remember that we do this racing lark because we want to have fun. If people pass you, get them back by passing them at the next corner. Pressure them into a mistake, then take advantage of your superior racing talent and overtake them cleanly.
Let's all try to remember that we enter the races to have fun and enjoy ourselves, not to create work for ourselves in the garage hammering out dents and repainting our cars.
Have fun out there; hope to see you all on the track soon. I will be driving the car with the big targets painted on its panels!
