Victory can sometimes be a tiresome thing. And so it was for John-Paul Wilkinson, who after finishing a good 11 seconds ahead of his fellow competitors and totally dominating the welcome return of 2CV racing to Thruxton, was heard to comment what a "boring race" he'd had!
.No such boredom for the rest of the field, nor indeed for the crowd. On a race track that couldn't make up its mind if it wanted to be wet or dry, there was a wealth of action. Before the first lap had been completed, Steve Panas and Simon Pearson were out after some questionable racing by Panas left Pearson with a destroyed front end. Paul Robertson also fell foul of the incident, but managed to keep going until he also retired before the end.
The battle for second place was frenetic, with Roger Lott, Ainslie Bousfield and Gary Adnitt swapping places all through the 10-lap race. Adnitt was to finish 4th - his best sprint race result. Tim Dodgson continued his improvement in form this year with an impressive 7th place finish, just ahead of Tim Grey. Grey, making a rare appearance behind the wheel of a 2CV, showed the crowd that his 26th place grid position was more about mechanical problems than driving skill.
Tom Woolard had a worrying moment when his engine caught fire, and the Thruxton marshalls were caught unprepared as they had no working extinguishers. The course car had to be brought out to dowse the flames. If their faces were red, then so must have been Nick Ireland's as his car ground to a halt on lap 4 after running out of fuel!
