Mondello Park - 19/20 July 1997

They came, they saw, they conquered. The Scots triumphed at Mondello, taking first, second, third and fifth places at the 1997 24 hour race, with three of them breaking the magical 1000 laps barrier.

Norry Taylor's "La Shark" team, consisting of Cameron Ritchie, Roger Lott, Bill Murray and ex-BTCC driver Eugene O'Brien, led from start to finish, with O' Brien also claiming the fastest lap. Last year's winners, Roy Eastwood's ECAS team, could only manage fourth place against this onslaught.

It was by no means an easy victory. After 24 hours and 1017 laps the gap between 1st and 2nd was a mere 9 seconds. This must have been particularly frustrating for the second placed team of Chris Higson, as at one point their car was held for 30 seconds in the pits by an enhusiastic race marshal during a pace car period.

There were many other tales of disappointment. Royce Grey's team who qualified at the front of the grid looked very strong, but mechanical failures were to be their undoing. The same went for the Flying Duck Racing team, who had one of the fastest cars on the circuit but could only scrape 24th place after a series of problems that kept them in the pits for over 2½ hours. the fact that all 32 cars finished the race says something about the durability of a 2CV.

For the first time a team from mainland Europe were participating; the IRRM Motor Club team representing Belgium, who finished a commendable 14th.

It would be impossible to try and condence the experiences of this weekend into a few pages. I personally have many happy memories (apart from twisting my ankle during post-race drunken hurdling), not least of which being my team's wonderful 7th place finish (MRB Racing).

Here's to 1998!
